Elementary

First and Second Grade

A Beka Book has designed a fast paced, comprehensive, skills-teaching system that makes spelling "second nature" to young writers.

In lower grades the weekly spelling lists are arranged phonetically so that students will be able to identify the sounds they hear with the patterns they see. Upper grades continue to build on the phonics foundation with application exercises; enjoyable word games , quizzes, and dictionary tips provide extra reinforcement.

The main goal of St. Pete Prep is to present a step-by-step approach to good penmanship that is consistent from grade to grade. The students are taught neatness and correct letter formation as they learn that a person's work is a portrait of himself. Each day as students practice their writing, they will also improve their phonics skills with applications built right into the writing exercises. Older students enjoy writing on various topics as well as penmanship exercises.

Each year, 75,000 first graders begin the road to successful reading with the A Beka Book Reading Program. The advantages these children receive through phonics helps them to excel throughout their school years. Children are thrilled because they read, and they have instilled within them a lifelong enthusiasm for reading.

The A Beka Book Reading Program features fascinating stories that spark interest and at the same time build student's character, comprehension skills, and understanding. The result is highly motivated, confident students who delight in the amount and variety of scriptural sound reading material available to them. A variety of literature from delightful classic to modern stories, poetry, and children's novels gives students insight into their culture and their world and presents them with ideas and values. A Beka Book readers are filled with colorful illustrations to instruct, inspire, and spark the imagination.

The A Beka Book Arithmetic covers number recognition, counting, and writing 1 to 1,000, greatest and least, counting and writing by tens, fives, twos, and threes, number sequences, ordinary numbers, addition facts through 13 and three digit addition with carrying, subtraction facts through 13 and two-digit subtraction, story problems, numbers before and after by ones, twos, tens between numbers, counting and combining coins, telling time to the nearest five minutes, recognize odd and even numbers, English and some metric measures, place value in ones, tens, and hundreds, unit fractions, reading a thermometer, using a ruler, multiple combinations, concept of multiplication, calendars, reading pictographs and bar graphs, developing listening skills, and roman numerals.

The Health, Safety, and Manners portion of the curriculum covers, eating good foods, exercising, rest, posture, care of body, clothes, home, safety at home and away from home, on streets, playgrounds, and water, manners at home, school, and in public.

The Science portion covers discovering myself, my toys, animals and insects, plants and seasons.

History and Geography teaches about the American Flag, American Freedoms, symbols of America, great people of America, songs of America, travel of Mexico, Peru, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, England, the Netherlands, Norway, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Israel, Egypt, India, China, Australia, Guam, American Samoa.
